It wasn’t too long ago that I first reviewed the William Baume collection from Baume & Mercier for the print edition of August Man. And now it looks like the watchmakers at Baume & Mercier have been hard at work preparing for 2011 SIHH with an update of their older (not by much) William Baume 180th anniversary collection.

The new 42 mm Classima is still powered by a Dubois Depraz 14400 decorated with Cotes de Geneve and while many hardcore watch enthusiasts will thumb their noses at this mass-produced movement not even developed by Baume & Mercier, the truth is; It is an affordable young professional’s first timepiece and even though it’s based on a modified ETA 2892A2 ebauche, it is still an automatic jumping hour high end complication no less; Sure it’s no A. Lange & Sohne but this is your chance to own 1 of 500 worldwide classically designed and stylishly elegant models.

Distinguished, sophisticated and royal. I’d use some of these adjectives to describe what I believe to be one of the more luxurious but satisfyingly affordable (at least in terms of price point) timepieces in the Baume & Mercier collection. Gorgeously indulgent at 18 carat red gold, the 39mm timepiece is equipped with a Soprod 9035 (based on the ETA 2892).
