Classic Elegance: Piaget Altiplano Makes Thin In Again

Inventive, innovative yet undeniably classic.

Although Piaget has been known more for its jewellery than for watches, the truth of the matter is this luxury atelier has been making history since they started making movements in 1874. Fact of the matter is Piaget owns a slice of horological history, making their mark with ultra-thin watches when they won the world thinness record in 1957.

This white gold Altiplano, a Piaget icon in its own right, is classic elegance defined.

The Piaget Altiplano or blanc: Classic yet Modern

A contradiction in terms perhaps but to me, the small seconds placed oh so rebelliously at 11 o’clock is horological genius. Though it’s not quite the caliber 9P from 1957, Piaget’s Altiplano keeps the original small seconds tradition of classic retrotastic watches but reinvents the genre by not conforming to the standard look of that category. It’s this dash of Piaget innovation that keeps a classic watch from looking like every other classic mens luxury watch.

Beyond unique placement of the small seconds complication, the watch is given the definitive 21st update with the regular case diameter of 40mm and with thickness topping 6.81mm dead center, the edges of this luxurious timepiece are almost razor thin.

The Altiplano's 838P caliber measuring 2.5 mm makes the thinness possible.

Piaget Altiplano or blanc Technical Specs

The 838P caliber is manual wound which means there's no oscillating weight to obscure your appreciation of the movement that powers the Piaget Altiplano

The 838P caliber for the Piaget Altiplano is visible through crystal caseback and the finishing is nicely accented by blue hued screws complete with “Côtes de Genève” typical of haute horlogerie. Simple black rhodium hands and markers keep the dial clean and simple. The lack of clutter is luxury paramount- Piaget certainly knows they don’t need to scream when they’re backed by serious watchmaking street cred.
