Darren Lee

Age:
31
Occupation:
Director, Branding and Communications Consultation
I would definitely pick up snowboarding. You experience pain and beauty at the same time.

Better known to the world as Shentonista – the local Scott Schuman equivalent – Darren Lee spends his time photographing Singapore’s finest dressed around the business district and also heads UNIFORM, a studio that explores new media communications and branding, among other things. An unusual occupation? Definitely.

AM: How did you end up being in your current profession?

DL: I was a stylist before, then joined a video and branding production house. That experience led me to believe in the things I do now. It’s rewarding to be able to work with local creatives and local brands, and for everyone to share their perspectives.

AM: Tell us about the one thing you’re really good at:

DL: Being persistent.

AM: If you could pick up any skill, what would it be, and why?

DL: I would definitely pick up snowboarding. You experience pain and beauty at the same time.

AM: What is one thing you hate that you love?

DL: I hate that I love shoes so much.

AM: Who, or what, is your muse in life?

DL: It would have to be the Internet, the people around me and those on Shentonista.

AM: The mark of a successful individual is…

DL: Is the ability to have fun at work, while being able to keep the family happy and pay the bills. And having everyone around you believe it.

AM: One celebrity that mesmerises you is…

DL: Charlotte Gainsbourg.

AM: The four things that matter to you most are…

DL: Coffee, cigarettes, clothes and the cinema.
