His portrait of the "Afghan Girl" that appeared on National Geographic magazine made headlines in 1985 and she has since come to represent the condition of human suffering as a consequence of war, but these days, celebrated photographer Steve McCurry is working with other noted figures. Such as Adriana Lima, for example, and Isabeli Fontana. Yes we're referring to that annual calendar that all men look forward to with anticipation, the ultra-smoking-hot Pirelli calendar. McCurry is the photographer who has just rounded up work on the 2013 edition of this pinup, shooting in Brazil with locals and international supermodels.

Shooting in Rio de Janeiro, the photographer spent two weeks exploring the streets and people of the city, revisiting the location once more with Pirelli. "I tried to portray Brazil, its landscape, its economy and its culture, along with the human element" said McCurry. "This was the story I wanted to tell through my lens. For me photography is an important expressive means to tell large and small stories of daily life."

Unlike previous editions of the calendar which celebrates beauty through the lens by celebrated photographers such as Patrick Demarchelier and Terry Richardson, McCurry switches between the models who are participating in this year's edition and photos of the mundane and ordinary, the regular and the glamorous. ""I look for the moment of passage, when the image reveals a bit of tension," he points out.

A total of 34 images in the calendar depict Rio in an artistic fashion through McCurry's eyes: 23 portraits are of actresses and models, nine of regular life and two photos of graffiti and murals. A total of 11 models appear in the calendar: Isabeli Fontana, Adriana Lima, actress Sonia Braga, singer Marisa Monte, Italian-egyptian actress Elisa Sednaoui, Czech model Petra Nemcova, Tunisian model Hanaa Ben Abdesslem, Ethiopian model Liya Kebede, and American models Karlie Kloss, Kyleigh Kuhn and Summer Rayne Oakes. Unfortunately those hoping fore more flesh may be sorely disappointed by McCurry's photos.
