In terms of watchmakers, Piaget has often been sort of an independent spirt, un-inclined to make watches that follow trends or fads. Their entry as a Premier Sponsor for the Independent Spirit Awards the third year running is of little surprise.
This not only being the third but also coinciding with the 25th anniversary of an august ceremony that not only rewards independence but most importantly, fosters the creative spirit, vision and derring-do of the independent film community.
Shoestrings are part and parcel of that life and they're proud to acknowledge how much they have overcome (shoestrings are intertwined on their trophies) to achieve such distinction and thanks to corporate sponsors like Piaget, the Spirit Awards get to enjoy their moment in the sparkle and spotlight, stepping away from an overpowering Hollywood.
While the leading ladies of the evening were decked out in precious jewels of the Limelight Jazz range, the men made Piaget their dress watch of choice. The Rectangle a l’Ancienne in white gold with a dramatic black dial was Adrien Brody's pick but ultimately, the limelight (no pun intended) was stolen by Best Actor winner, Jeff Bridges and long time friend Andy Garcia.
During an unscripted impromptu moment, Bridges took center stage behind the keys of Piaget's grand piano and gave the surprised audience a private performance. Garcia in three piece suit and rose gold Piaget Emperador (pictured left) on wrist, followed suit and played a string of his favourites. Certainly, it was an inspired moment, perhaps motivated by one of watchmaking's most innovative brands.
