Jordan Chua founded Envy Motors barely a year ago as a premium second-hand car dealership that specialises in luxury supercars as well as carefully-curated continental and classic models. The company’s bootstrap model has worked exceedingly well, and given its founder the independence to make his own decisions. Our 2019 A-Lister is already working on expansion plans, with the latest milestone being a proprietary smartphone app that promises to complete the experience of owning a luxury car – if you had obtained it via Envy Motors, that is.
How did Envy Motors get to where it is now?
I think Envy Motors got to where it is today because we are very customer oriented. We pay attention to customers’ needs and wants. I try to fulfil whatever promises I make. And I am careful never to overpromise. I believe in delivering within your means and thinking from the customers’ point of view to understand and serve them well. Of course, I also go the extra mile for them. I wouldn’t say Envy Motors is where I want it to be yet though. There are other things that I must do for Envy Motors but you need to bide your time for certain things. Now is just not the right time.
Meanwhile, you’re launching a new app?
Yes, primarily for customer loyalty and retention, by adding more value to their experience. Again, it comes back to going the extra mile for them.
What will this app do?
One of the app’s features is the Envy Privileges function. All our clients who have sold or bought a car through us get to enjoy certain privileges with our partners. Some of these partners include clubWAN, a lifestyle brand and MBM, a major workshop in Singapore. Other partners comprise automotive services, lifestyle brands and F&B outlets.
As with any car dealership app, there’s the showroom where customers can view all the cars that we have. Support for financing and insurance are also available on the app. There’s also Envy Daily, a blog where we post anything interesting about cars that customers can access from the app. One other cool thing that we have is called the Envy Garage. That’s a car manager for our clients – they’ll be able to use it to keep track of their loans, road taxes, insurance and monthly payments.
Just how far do you intend to take Envy Motors?
I’ll be looking into car rentals, workshops, car insurance and even in-house financing. Envy Motors is also the exclusive distributor for an electric vehicle manufacturing company, SWAG EV, which manufactures electric motorbikes. In time SWAG will come to Singapore and we’ll be selling their bikes here. Those are just some of the future plans for Envy Motors that we have mapped out.
If you had to reflect on your whole journey so far, how will you summarise it? Do you have words of wisdom to share?
I’m blessed and grateful, but it took a lot of hard work and humility. You have to be humble, for sure, and you really need to know your stuff. Be confident and show people that you’re more than just a sales guy. You have to possess the right leadership skills in life, then people will be willing to give you opportunities to take up. You must also treat your clients like friends – with sincerity. Treat them genuinely, then they’ll come to appreciate you and remember you. And believe me, that goes a long way. AM
