Pop Culture

With 2020 around the bend, instead of detailing goals and itemising resolutions, why don’t you try working on fulfilment instead? See, Bryan Chin was a good real estate agent. He made the moolah and had a great run for three years. But apparently, money can’t buy you happiness. Browsing the shelving displays at a shoe shop, he decided it was time that heart ruled head. The website Masses was born to throw a spotlight on street culture, from streetwear to sneakers to arts, music, and lifestyle updates.

TELL US ABOUT THE FIRST PAIR OF SNEAKERS YOU EVER GOT.

My mom got me my first pair and they were, I think, limited edition New Balance sneakers. To give you some context, growing up, my mom has always been frugal. We only bought what we needed. But when I turned 18, she bought me these sneakers that were limited to only 574 pairs in the world. It cost over Can you imagine, back then RM600 was a fortune! I was hooked ever since.

TELL US ABOUT YOUR SIGNATURE ANNUAL EVENT SNEAKERLAH.

2019’s Sneakerlah saw an attendance of over 32,000 people over two days. Ever since we started six years ago, we’ve grown bigger every year. But the best feeling you can get is when the patrons thank you on the way out. I mean, they’ve paid for the entrance ticket, they don’t owe you a “good job” or “thanks for this event”. So when they say it, I know we’ve done something right.

WHAT HAS FOLLOWING YOUR HEART TAUGHT YOU?

You know, I want my kids to grow up happy. When my wife was pregnant with our first child, I kept thinking about how I could raise a happy child. I realised that you can’t, without first being happy yourself. That fulfilment can only come from doing what you truly like and living life the way you want to.
