Ernest Ng

Comic artist

Having found fame through his work as a comic artist, many have come to know the name of Ernest Ng mainly through his first few entertaining comics such as Bro, Don’t Like That La Bro. However, it is during this pandemic that he started drawing for his Covidball Z which propelled him to new heights.

After all, most of us could use a little bit of humour during these tough times. And while he is recording all that is going on in Malaysia and further at the moment, albeit in a funny and more exciting way, the humble Ernest refuses to see his work as something that preserves heritage at the moment. “That’s kind of heavy for me; my main objective is to make people smile during trying times. Yea, some people are looking at my work as something which the future generations can look back to, but I see it being way further into the future – it’s a bit too early to say, I feel I don’t deserve it at this moment.”

How long have you been drawing for?

Well I’ve been drawing since I was 5-years-old, but I only started drawing comics professionally since 2010, so it’s been 10 years.
How has your content evolved over the years?
It changes based on how the world changes. Initially I used to do a lot of men humour, toilet humour, but slowly I realised that once I had more following, I had to represent a certain voice, so I started to address certain things that people are talking about and such.

Meanwhile, in terms of drawing style, I’ve always been very heavily influenced by ‘90s cartoons such as Dexter’s Lab and Powerpuff Girls, but I’m also a huge fan of anime and manga, so over time I kind of mixed and matched the styles. Now the way I express characters and such is leaning more towards the Japanese style.

How long does it take you to complete a comic?

For a chapter which is about 10 to 20 pages, it can take between a week to two weeks. One of the major challenges is that sometimes when I draw, I compile the topics of the week and put them in chronological order. Then, if there’s a new update in between, it becomes stressful because I’ve to rewrite the story again. Basically I’ve to keep adapting the piece I’m working on.
