The level-headed Malaysian boy from Ipoh, after having spent seven years abroad in Shanghai, has firmly planted his feet back home and has taken over the family business at the beginning of 2018. The Big Apple Preschool now boasts multiple branches in Perak, Selangor, Kuala Lumpur, Pahang, Sabah and Johor as a conducive environment to inspire and nurture the young minds of the future.
How was your MCO?
MCO has been good. I’ve been in Ipoh for the whole MCO with my family. I spent a lot of time reading, a lot of time working out, and I got a new business idea too. During the MCO, I started to think that sometimes being alone is good too, and I became more self-disciplined. When I came back from Shanghai, I lived in Ipoh for a year in 2018 and met an old friend of mine. I’ve known him for 13 years, since our INTI college days, so I met a lot of my current friends through him in order to reestablish my connections here.
What did you miss most about Malaysia when you were overseas?
I think it’s the food. In Shanghai, the only breakfast you can have in the morning is a Chinese breakfast, like Xiao Long Bao or La Mian. So when I came back, the breakfast here is more diversified. There is dim sum, mamak food and more; there’s a lot more choices here. I’m from Ipoh, so I like curry mee, and I think the tau foo fah and soya milk in Ipoh is the best I’ve ever had and probably is the best in the world!
How do you think the kids are affected by the MCO?
I think they’re actually enjoying this MCO. They have more chances to watch television, cartoons, and spend time with their family. In these three months, we did a lot of online teaching and made a lot of videos for learning, uploaded and downloaded homework sheets for them. But noticed that sometimes it’s quite hard for young kids to focus too long when they’re watching an educational video. What we did was we tried to make it shorter and placed more “triggers’’ inside our videos like games, different tones through the video by the teachers to make it more interesting and it has been more effective.
