Naim Daniel

Music

Naim Daniel is no stranger to the entertainment industry, having grown up on screen. He kicked off his acting career at the age of eleven and quickly established himself as an actor with longevity and one to keep your eye on. From doing acting gigs on national television and Astro to playing multiple roles on the big screen but like many talented actors, he decided to push his limits and transitioned into making music. Naim continues to reach new heights with his latest success arriving in the form of an MTV Europe Music Awards 2021 nomination. Along with this huge achievement, he has also shown just how much he cares about the lives and well-being of others by organising a food bank back in July 2021 during the third Movement Control Order (MCO)—a trait we often look for in our Men of the Year recipients.

YOU’VE RECENTLY BEEN NOMINATED FOR BEST SOUTHEAST ASIA ACT AT MTV EMA AWARDS, HOW DO YOU FEEL ABOUT THE SUCCESS AND SUPPORT YOU’VE GARNERED OVER THE YEARS?
For me, I personally did not expect to be nominated for the Best Southeast Asia Act at the MTV EMA Awards. I would’ve never imagined myself to be nominated amongst such big names from around the globe. So it was truly a huge achievement to say the least, for both me and my team and also for the local music scene. Deep in my heart, I know hard work really pays off and this nomination showed that it really does. I really hope I can achieve even more in the near future, we can only go up from here.

WHERE DO YOU DRAW INSPIRATION FROM FOR YOUR SONGS?
I think it comes from the fact that I don’t restrict myself by listening to just one particular genre. I believe that music is universal thus I get inspired by a number of artists, local and foreign. I look up to people who are driven by their passion such as artists like Noh Salleh, Hael Husaini, Ismail Izzani, Anuar Zain or even Kunto Aji from Indonesia. There’s this one artist called Dato’ Sudirman bin Haji Arshad whom I truly idolise—he was a brilliant and amazing performer, and the way he carried himself in the music industry was really inspiring to me. He is one of the reasons why I keep doing what I’m doing.

YOU’RE CURRENTLY KEPT BUSY DURING THE WEEKENDS WITH RECORDINGS, ARE YOU PREPARING FOR AN UPCOMING ALBUM? WHAT ARE SOME OF THE CHALLENGES YOU’VE FACED?
Yes, I am currently working on my first debut album and I think it will consist of nine or ten songs. Some of the challenges I’ve faced while preparing the album is the fact that we had to revisit the tracklist and ‘update’ them—this project has actually been in the works for almost two years and due to the pandemic, we couldn’t release it earlier. So now that we’re back, we had to analyse each track and add on to them to where we see fit, just so it fits the music scene better now compared to when we made it. I actually can’t wait for the album to be out. There are so many things I’m dying to share with my fans, who call themselves the Naimians. I hope everyone will enjoy the album as much as me and my team have enjoyed crafting it.
