The grandeur of Shanghai in the age of the 50s has often sprung a wealth of inspiration for modern designers who find themselves captivated by the beauty of the city. Shanghai Tang, the fashion and retail label founded by Hong Kong entrepreneur David Tang in 1994, has been known for its rejuvenation of the traditional Han costume into dynamic and trendy designs that follow modern fashion stylings with a Mandarin twist. Its Mandarin Collar Society, a members-only, by-invite group of influencers around the world that wear the mandarin collar, has helped promote the label’s origins. On 15 December 2012, Shanghai Tang hosted an exclusive event at its newly opened Takashimaya boutique, offering August Man readers the opportunity to preview its upcoming Spring collection, and a glimpse of its most exclusive bespoke service, which is offered in only a handful of locations around the world. Shanghai Tang is known not merely for its clothing but a broad range of accessories and homeware that feature Chinese motifs in elegant designs, from modern jewellery in jade and silver for the ladies, to silverware for the home. Its bespoke service takes the traditional cheongsam, to spectacular standards, drawing from the skill and knowledge of couturiers in the West and mixing it with Eastern designs. The prize of the evening had to be a particularly outstanding gown in gold lace, with beadwork by hand. It left just enough for the imagination while giving the female figure a stupendous silhouette. Executive Chairman Raphael le Masne de Chermont, at the event, commented on the new store design, which offers a modern free-flowing space and the complete range of Shanghai Tang products, including a special VIP corner for bespoke suits and gowns, and also noted that the label, today owned by Richemont, has experienced great success with its style of modern Chinese fashion. He also hinted at the opening of a new flagship boutique in Hong Kong.
