In celebration of the freedom of expression and artistic creativity, Kim Jones collaborates with designer and iconoclast Shawn Stussy for Dior men’s fall 2020 collection, featuring a new interpretation of the maison’s logo.
Youth, vitality, the spirit of the new – such were the founding principles of the “New Look” introduced by Christian Dior in 1947, and with it came an original perspective on fashion and the world, a post-war renaissance. The couturier demonstrated his willingness to cross borders and explore new worlds, such as the American continent. His story and visionary philosophy became the inspiration for Dior men’s artistic director Kim Jones’s fall 2020 show in Miami, Florida.
As a tribute to haute couture and the house’s heritage, Kim Jones combined embroidery, beading and myriad materials with tailoring savoir-faire and psychedelic elements, and presented a medley that drew on a multitude of influences.
Fluid jackets in tropical wools sported hand-stitched buttons, reminiscent of the original bar suit, an icon of the new look, while a limited-edition metal version of the saddle bag was also revealed.
The house of Dior has always cultivated a passionate relationship with art, and this fascination is at the heart of its inventiveness now more than ever. In this spirit, Kim Jones presented his show on the eve of the inauguration of the Art Basel Miami fair, directly across the street from the Rubell Museum. The venue was chosen as an ode to Monsieur Dior’s first vocation as a gallerist before he became a couturier.
The link between art and fashion continued in the form of a special collaboration between Kim Jones and renowned artist and designer Shawn Stussy. Positioned at the intersection of counterculture and the creative world of surfing, this major, multifaceted talent has put his creative stamp on the Dior logo by reinterpreting the house’s name in clean, graffiti style with a series of new prints.
The new signature plays on contrasts, spanning black on white, green on pink, yellow on green and white on blue. A graphic emblem of the creative dialogue between Kim Jones and the American artist, it proudly adorns key leather goods, from a shopper and Saddle bag to card holders. Their vision is also interpreted in jewellery by Yoon Ahn, in a celebration of freedom, movement, creation and spirit; a joie de vivre Dior holds dear.
