Journey to a galaxy far away, hop aboard the Orient Express, and watch the Supertrees light up again. These must-see events happening in January 2021 are sure to kick off the New Year with a bang.

2020 is done and dusted and undoubtedly it was a challenging year for all of us. With the Circuit Breaker now in our rear-view mirror and most sectors of the country back in business, we can now set our sights on bringing some normalcy back into our lives — especially from a social aspect.

This January, there will be no shortage of exciting and intriguing events to catch island-wide. Whether you are an art connoisseur, Star Wars fan, or just in desperate need of something to do, these January events will surely inject some excitement in 2021.

The Supertrees Light Up Again

With Phase 3 in effect, Gardens by the Bay has brought back its Garden Rhapsody light and sound presentation. The popular show at Supertree Grove returns with a full version from 8 January with 10 shows planned for 2021. For the month of January, visitors will get to experience Garden Waltz, an uplifting compilation of waltz music from great composers, such as Frédéric Chopin’s ‘Grande Valse Brilliante’, Johann Strauss Junior’s ‘On the Beautiful Blue Danube’ and Emile Waldteufel’s ‘Skaters’ Waltz’. The 15-minute shows take place at their original 7:45pm and 8:45pm slots every evening and are free admission.

Singapore Art Week (SAW) 2021 takes over the island from 22 to 30 January. The highly anticipated annual gathering of the Singapore visual arts community will be held across physical and digital realms. As before, the event will celebrate art by bringing together Singapore’s vibrant artist community. Carrying the theme of ‘Art Takes Over’, the ninth edition of SAW will boast over 100 programmes. This year’s edition showcases the largest number of commissioned works to date, with over 40 outstanding Singapore-based projects reflecting the diverse capabilities of local artists and curators.

History Of The Orient Express

Explore the fascinating history of the world’s most famous train in Once Upon A Time on The Orient Express. Held until 13 June 2021, the pop-up attraction at Gardens by the Bay offers visitors an opportunity to embark on a journey through the history of the train. Spanning over 2000sqm, the attraction features two original train carriages. Precious items ranging from uniforms to shields to priceless porcelain as well as original Louis Vuitton luggage will also be on display. Once Upon A Time on The Orient Express will also feature a gift shop, café, restaurant and lounge and an escape room experience.

Gajah Gallery hosts Ashley Bickerton’s second solo show in Singapore – ‘Heresy or Codswallop’. Held from 20 January to 14 February 2021, the exhibition will showcase some of the artist’s most comprehensive works to date. It will bring together the last decade of Bickerton’s practice, featuring works from 2011 to the present day. The exhibition catalogue will also feature an essay by art historian Gregory Galligan, which provides an extensive look at the artist’s practice from the ’90s to today.

The World Of Star Wars

Explore the characters and worlds of Star Wars at the Star Wars Identities Experience at the ArtScience Museum. Fans of Star Wars will get a chance to view close to 200 original items from the extensive Lucas Museum of Narrative Art archive. This includes authentic props, models, costumes, and artwork from the original films. Visitors will embark on a customised, interactive identity quest to gain new insights on the Star Wars characters and explore the science behind the sci-fi franchise. The Star Wars Identities Experience runs from 30 January to 13 June 2021. Singapore marks the final stop of the exhibition’s global tour. Tickets go on sale from 15 January.
