Now you can associate French luxury maison Louis Vuitton with polka dots as well, for its latest collaboration, just recently announced by creative director Marc Jacobs, is with Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama. Famed for her work with polka dots, repetition and patterns, her work centers around the surreal, abstract expressionism and pop art. Back in 2008, Kusama had one of her works auctioned off by Christies for a whopping US$5.1 million, a record for a living female artist. Kusama’s work encompasses sculpture, fashion, film and has known Jacobs since 2006, when he first visited her studio. Late last year, they got together to collaborate on a range of fashion accessories, shoes, leather goods and jewellery which will be introduced later this year. Coinciding with a retrospective of Kusama’s work which takes place at the Tate Modern in London this year, Louis Vuitton will also be hosting some of her works at its maison in London, on New Bond Street in July. The French fashion label is also a sponsor of the Tate Modern exhibition. Marc Jacobs reveals how the collaboration came about in the video above.
