The Malaysia Open 2023 was held at the Axiata Arena in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, from January 10 to January 15. This badminton tournament featured some of the best players in the world competing against each other and was upgraded from a BWF Super 750 to a BWF Super 1000 tournament. The Malaysia Open 2023 also kickstarted the BWF World Tour, which will culminate with the World Tour Finals in December.


In the 66th edition of the Malaysia Open, a total of 64 players participated in the singles matches, while 86 pairs participated in doubles matches. Some of the top-seeded players competing this year include Viktor Axelsen, Carolina Marin, PV Sindhu, Lakshya Sen, HS Prannoy and Tai Tzu Ying.

Malaysia Open 2023: Asian players to watch out for

At the Malaysia Open 2023, Singapore’s Loh Kean Yew will be competing in men’s singles, Jin Yujia/Crystal Wong in women’s doubles and Terry Hee/Jessica Tan in the mixed doubles.

Malaysian Open Tournament Highlights: January 15, 2023

On January 15, Denmarks’ Viktor Axelsen declared victory in the men’s singles tournament, while Japan’s Akane Yamaguchi won in the women’s singles division. Japan dominated the tournament with Takuro Hoki/Yugo Kobayashi also winning for men’s doubles. The tournament also saw a double win for China as Chen Qingchen/Jia Yifan won in women’s doubles, whereas Zheng Siwei/Huang Yaqiong won in mixed doubles.

What happened earlier in the tournament:

On day 4 of the tournament, Loh Kean Yew was eliminated from the competition after losing to Thailand’s Kunlavut Vitidsarn. In women’s doubles, Jin Yujia and Crystal Wong also lost to Korea’s Baek Ha-na and Lee Yu-lim. Terry Hee and Jessica Tan had failed to qualify for the quarter-finals in the mixed doubles as well.
