Right from the get-go of this trailer, you know the makers of this movie want to make you feel – not through cheesy tactics, mind you. It tugs at the heartstrings of fans of the series as it opens with an epic yet haunting soundtrack with elements from a familiar theme featured in Episode V. Even if you don’t recognise it right away, it will invoke a flood of feelings and memories. Fans more in-tune with the Force will recognise this soundtrack to be “The Rebel Fleet Theme”, which is a particularly intelligent way to introduce Rogue One, in my opinion.
To the unacquainted, Rogue One: A Star Wars story is the first of the standalone Star Wars films. It tells the story of an unlikely group of heroes, including the likes of a seemingly blind Ip Man (we jest), who band together on a mission to steal the plans to the Death Star – an Imperial weapon capable of destroying whole planets.
It’s great to see Lucasfilms exploring the stories of characters that are not of the Skywalker/Solo lineage, (although Darth Vader does make an appearance towards the end of the trailer). Frankly, we’ve seen enough of that dramatic family. It’s time for the underdogs to shine. *Spoiler Alert* Considering Alderaan was turned into cosmic dust by the Death Star, I can’t help but feel the little guys don’t succeed. Still, it looks like a great movie and I can’t wait to see it.
