For its new Spring & Summer 2021 Collection, Onitsuka Tiger is showcasing the brand’s new attitude.
The Japanese fashion brand has always been at the forefront of style, infusing fashion with sports along with youth and culture. Onitsuka Tiger’s latest collection emphasises that with a fashionably chic collection that combines heritage with innovation.
Smooth Sailing
Ever since the brand was conceptualised over 70 years ago, Onitsuka Tiger has been synonymous in its ability to merge classic silhouettes with refreshing new styles. For its new Spring & Summer 2021 Collection, the brand continues that motif under the direction of Onitsuka Tiger Creative Director, Andrea Pompilio.
Based on the concept of “The Onitsuka Tiger Attitude”, the new collection consists of shoes, apparel and accessories that are inspired by the sails of ships. This element is presented decisively throughout the collection’s four main themes.
‘The Sailing Kite’ for instance features wash-finished fabric sewn together with zigzag stitching reminiscent of a ship’s sails. Meanwhile, sturdy and resilient nylon is the primary focus for ‘The Clean Lines’ concept.
Both ‘Vintage Is Now’ and ‘The Working Progress’ serve to juxtapose the new collection. The former exudes vintage-inspired dresses, tops, and skirts infused with sporty elements. Base colours of beige and white along with piping and tiered designs help characterise the concept for the latter.
Classics Reborn
The footwear collection also embodies the seafaring theme without sacrificing Onitsuka Tiger’s sporty heritage. The colour palette of the new models is presented in vibrant colours such as orange and sax blue along with solid black and vintage colours like burgundy and turquoise. Most significantly, the shoes combine archival elements from the brand’s past with contemporary designs.
The ‘ACROMOUNT’ for instance features a combination of fabric and leather to deliver a vintage vibe. Exuding a hybrid look is the ‘DENTIGRE MX’, which remixes elements from popular, long-selling models with the ‘DENTIGRE’, from AW20.
Part of the new Onitsuka Tiger Spring & Summer 2021 Collection also includes an updated ‘TAI-CHI-REB SOCK MT’. The brand has modernised the new footwear, giving it a contemporary look with a new Knit Upper. Featuring a supple and slim one-piece design, which is characteristic of tai chi shoes, the footwear also features the signature Onitsuka Tiger Stripes sewn into the upper.
This not only accentuates the design of the shoe but also enhances the slim impressionable form that is characteristic of the ‘TAI-CHI-REB’ style. Additionally, by incorporating a heel-up type innersole, the shoes also deliver comfort and a beautiful silhouette when worn.
