Ernest Hemingway’s legacy has surpassed the literary. The American writer has gone down the annals of culture as a man that will always represent a particular brand of hedonism — he loved stereotypically masculine pursuits like hunting and brawling, and above all, he loved his booze. The affair he had with alcohol is so famous that a cocktail bar was established in Hong Kong to celebrate that nugget in Hemingway’s history (and yes, he enjoyed cocktails just as much as he loved his scotch with soda). Named The Old Man, this Sheung Wan-based bar has only been open just shy of two years, and yet it bagged top spot at the recent Asia’s 50 Best Bars awards for 2019, knocking Singapore-based two-time champion, Manhattan, off the list.
Before you think you have to book an air ticket to enjoy The Old Man experience, just know that the bar opened its sophomore outpost in Kesa House along Keong Saik Road a few months prior to the celebrated announcement. The Old Man Singapore brings the pioneering menu developed by the bartenders in Hong Kong to our shores, so locals can be wowed by their liquid innovations too. And trust us, these drinks are pretty inventive.
We paid a visit and worked our way through the menu for you. Here are the drinks that guaranteed we’ll be regulars at The Old Man Singapore, for sure, especially since the cocktails are priced at S$17++ across the board.
