When you can no longer build sideways, the only way is down. Or in Propeller’s case, up. The newest rooftop bar in Singapore, Propeller at Bay Hotel Singapore ticks all the right boxes – prices, views and more importantly, good food and drinks.

It wasn’t too long ago that Loof was the city’s only open rooftop bar. Now, there’s one in almost every trendy district. Some spots (Ce La Vie, Lantern, 1-Altitude, Smoke and Mirrors) are often featured on Instagram while others (Fabrika, Mr Punch, Prelude) are more well-known for their stiff drinks and unassuming attitude.

What makes Propeller stand out is that it’s said to be the first in the Harbourfront area. The view from the bar takes in the port’s non-stop action, VivoCity and Sentosa’s Cable Car line, and if you’re there at the right time (at 7.40pm and 8.40pm), fireworks from Sentosa’s Wings of Time show in the distance.

Drinks wise, they’ve kept prices reasonable (happy hour drinks from $7++) and house wines from $11-$12.50 per glass. Cocktails such as the signature Propeller Bay made using 42 Below vodka mixed with orange juice, lime espuma, raspberry syrup and thyme goes for $19. While the Mozartz ($19) – more of a dessert tipple made with chocolate liquor, Campari, Campano Antica Vermouth, orange foam and house-made Campari dust – is an ideal post weekend movie nightcap.

For food, there’s a tapas snack menu of pan-seared scallops with citrus fennel salad ($9.50), smoked duck on crisp potato skin ($7.50), with heavier items like the seared beef cubes with truffle mayonnaise ($9.90) and a cheese platter ($14).

While there’s more compelling views to take in from other rooftop spots, this isn’t a bad option if you’re looking for somewhere more chilled and laidback, or for a place to drink up before hitting St James Powerhouse or the beach bars on Sentosa.
