This one’s for Singaporean fans of German watchmaking: Nomos Glashütte and The Hour Glass have jointly announced the release of the Tangente ‘Red Dot’ 2018 timepiece.
Less a regular collection per se and more the second entry in what looks to be a regular series of partnerships, the Tangente ‘Red Dot’ 2018 follows the Nomos Red Dot, a special edition Zürich Worldtimer introduced by the same collaborators last year. Like its predecessor, the Tangente ‘Red Dot’ 2018 comes emblazoned with a red dot on its dial, this time to serve as an hour marker at six o’clock.
Any discussions about reappropriation will be well beyond this story’s scope, but suffice it to say that Singapore’s “Little Red Dot” moniker is one that started off as an insult, but has since become a source of pride for the country. It is this that Singapore-based watch retailer The Hour Glass is paying tribute to – literally – with the Red Dot series of timepieces.
The Tangente is a simple time-only watch and comes sized modestly with a case that’s just 37.5mm wide and 6.75mm high. Unlike the archetypal dress watch, however, its dial isn’t quite as understated, beginning with a contrasting small seconds hand in red at six o’clock, which matches the red dot mentioned above. The hour indexes also alternate between Arabic numerals in a Bauhaus-esque typeface, and simple baton markers, which create visual interest.
Nomos Glashütte’s hand-wound Alpha calibre is visible via the see-through case back, and comes complete with the hallmarks of Glashütte watchmaking, including Glashütte ribbing, blued screws, and the three-quarter plate. The movement comes with a fairly typical 43-hour power reserve.
Two references of the Tangente ‘Red Dot’ 2018 are available. One comes in a beige dial (officially called “Salmon”, but not quite red enough to in our opinion) with blue indexes and blued hours and minutes hands, while the other has a midnight blue dial with beige indexes and matching hands.
In a first for The Hour Glass, the Tangente ‘Red Dot’ 2018 will be available both offline at selected The Hour Glass and Watches of Switzerland boutiques, as well as online via a dedicated “digital pop-up store”. For more information, visit nomosreddot.thehourglass.com
