Travel is a hassle, especially today when airport security seems fixated on stripping as much dignity from it as possible. Packing is another painful organisation, especially if you’re travelling with kids. Making sure you have everything you need to look sharp without exceeding your baggage allowance can be an effort.
When you look at it, the heaviest items in your luggage are probably footwear. That is, unless you’re throwing in a leather jacket for the cool factor. The average men’s shoe weighs 1 to 1.5kg. We’ve found great options that weigh less, flatpack easily and are easy to mix it up with your outfits.
The Chukka/Desert Boot
The desert boot’s name comes literally from its origins – it was designed as a shoe that could survive the desert. Worn by officers off-duty in the heat, the suede-and-crepe boots were formalised by Nathan Clark. Clarks’ suede desert boots are still one of the most comfortable around, easy to flatten and pack. It’ll survive the heat and the cold, and keep your feet snug as well. Pair it with a safari jacket, a button up, a denim jacket, a suit… it works pretty much for most things except the most formal or black tie.
The Driving Shoe
You may think wearing a driving shoe while not driving is folly, but it depends on where you’re heading as well. Driving shoes are typically light on the outsole, which means they aren’t ideal for urban or wet locales. But if you’re going to a beachfront or a relaxed holiday, it’s a perfect match. Typically more daring in colour than a typical men’s shoe, and highly comfortable (as long as you’re not planning a trek), you’ve got a variety to select from. And they go well with a linen suit, shorts, tees, polos… everything you need for a good beach holiday.

The Canvas Sneaker
Obviously a great urban or suburban companion, the most iconic canvas sneakers are undoubtedly Converse’s Chuck Taylors. And we definitely keep a pair around all the time. But there are a ton of other options out there, and you’ll find it hard to pick from the assortment of options they have out there. Why the canvas sneaker? It’s light and easy to cram into any luggage, unisex and most importantly, easy to clean. So even if you get it dirty on a trip, toss it in a tub with some detergent and you’re back in the game. Sneakers are great walking shoes as well, and it’s the perfect partying shoe – pair it with a suit and t-shirt for best impact.

Sturdy, comfortable and stylish, it’s ideal for summer travel, the road trip, city tours, light trekking, and of course the beach. There’s so many options out there, and all of them offer fun options of the espadrille. And again, easy to style up and down. Plus, vegan-friendly.
